What the Tool Covers
Inside the spreadsheet, you’ll find clearly marked input cells (blue boxes) where you enter your project data. The sheet will then automatically calculate values (yellow boxes). Here’s what you can do with it:
- General Information
- Enter the number of daily users and average water consumption per person.
- The spreadsheet instantly calculates the daily flow rate (Q).
- Based on Q, it suggests the retention time (T) using standard formulas:
- If Q < 6 → T = 24 hours
- If Q between 6–14 → T = 33 – 1.5 × Q
- If Q > 14 → T = 12 hours
- Sludge Volume
- Define the desludging period (e.g., 2–5 years).
- The tool factors in sludge and scum accumulation rates (25 L/person for blackwater, 40 L/person for mixed flows).
- Using the sizing factor (F) table, which adjusts for ambient temperature, the spreadsheet calculates the volume of sludge storage required.
- Basin Dimensions
- After the calculations, the sheet gives you the total septic tank volume and breaks it down into design dimensions.
- It provides guidance on minimum depth (≥1.2 m), freeboard allowance, and tank width (W).
- It also suggests compartment lengths (first compartment ≈ 2/3 of total length, second ≈ 1/3).
- Visual Reference
- The sheet includes a schematic drawing of a two-chamber septic tank (primary + secondary), showing inlet and outlet positions to help visualize the final layout.
